Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.
As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.
Flagyl is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. It contains the drug metronidazole, which is available in generic form. Flagyl is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Trachoma (gonorrhea)
Gonorrhea and amoebiasis (trichomoniasis)
Gonorrhea and trichomoniasis (gonorrhea)
Trichomoniasis, a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in men, caused by a yeast-producing bacteria.
In the treatment of gonorrhea, the recommended dosage is 250 mg twice daily for 12 weeks. Gonorrhea can be caused by infection with the bacterium rickettsiae, which causes the disease in most cases.
The antibacterial activity of metronidazole is due to inhibition of the metabolism of metronidazole in the body.
Metronidazole is inactivated by the action of an enzyme called nitrolyzase. Nitrolyzase breaks down metronidazole in the body. This leads to an increase in the concentration of metronidazole in the blood. When this happens, the bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic. This leads to the symptoms of giardiasis, including anemia, fatigue, nausea, and pain.
Metronidazole is eliminated from the body as a white powder. It is soluble in water and in the urine. The excretion of metronidazole is fast. It is eliminated via urine, feces, and the bowel. The most common route of elimination is by the liver.
Metronidazole is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. The drug is eliminated predominantly by the liver. The elimination half-life is about 18 to 24 hours, and the drug can be absorbed with a peak about 24 hours after oral administration.
The most common side effects of metronidazole are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
